What is a driver? It's a program that is in charge of monitoring and controlling a hardware device. But it also takes a group of directives from a certain program and makes it possible for the device to understand and accept that program. All kinds of devices rely on drivers, including the printer, mouse, keyboard, and sound cards, just to name a few.

Drivers have to be updated on a regular basis, so that your computer and all of its components can run at their optimal level. There is some question as to how often you need to update the drivers. Some say drivers should be updated whenever any hardware or software changes, or any updates or additions are made to the computer. If the drivers are not updated, these folks believe your computer will stop working properly, because drivers will no longer be able to translate program commands and the hardware will not cooperate.

On the other hand, others believe you only need to update drivers if:

*There are obvious problems with hardware devices
*There are features not available on the current version of the driver
*The current driver tells you that you need an update
*The operating system tells you that you need a new driver
*There is a security problem with the existing driver

One way you can maintain hardware drivers is to just visit your computer maker's website and download the right drivers. But not all of the drivers are going to be listed on these websites.
